چکیده

Research has begun to explore the use of virtual humans (VHs) in medical interviews [1]. When designed as supportive and “safe” interaction partners, VHs may improve such screenings by encouraging patients to disclose more personal information [2-3]. In medical contexts, patients often feel resistance to selfdisclosure and engage in impression management to be viewed more positively by healthcare providers. This paper provides the first empirical evidence that VHs can reduce such resistance and impression management. In the context of health-screening interviews, we report a study in which participants interacted with a VH that was either teleo-operated by humans (Wizard-of-Oz) or fully-automated (AI). Independently, we manipulated whether participants believed the VH was controlled by humans or automation. As predicted, participants who believed they were interacting with a computer reported lower resistance to selfdisclosure, lower impression management and higher system usability than those who believed they were interacting with a human operator. Whether the virtual human was actually operated by a human or AI only affected ratings of the system’s usability. These results suggest that automated VHs can help overcome a significant barrier to obtaining truthful patient information in medical domains.

Human Computer Interaction Using Vision-Based Hand Gesture Recognition

With the rapid emergence of 3D applications and virtual environments in computer systems; the need for a new type of interaction device arises. This is because the traditional devices such as mouse, keyboard, and joystick become inefficient and cumbersome within these virtual environments. In other words, evolution of user interfaces shapes the change in the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). In...

The Symbiosis of Human and Semantic Technology Through the Lens of Actor-Network Theory

Background:  Semantic technologies (STs) have made machine reasoning possible by providing intelligent data management methods. This capability has created new forms of interaction between humans and STs, which is called "semantic interaction."  The increasing spread of this form of interaction in daily life reveals the need to identify the factors affecting it and introduce the requirements of...

Construction and Analysis of Tissue-Specific Protein-Protein Interaction Networks in Humans

We have studied the changes in protein-protein interaction network of 38 different tissues of the human body. 123 gene expression samples from these tissues were used to construct human protein-protein interaction network. This network is then pruned using the gene expression samples of each tissue to construct different protein-protein interaction networks corresponding to different studied ti...

Improving Agent Performance for Multi-Resource Negotiation Using Learning Automata and Case-Based Reasoning

In electronic commerce markets, agents often should acquire multiple resources to fulfil a high-level task. In order to attain such resources they need to compete with each other. In multi-agent environments, in which competition is involved, negotiation would be an interaction between agents in order to reach an agreement on resource allocation and to be coordinated with each other. In recent ...
